Can people change? The question isn’t as simple as it first sounds. It’s not a rhetorical question and there seems to be empirical evidence on either side of the answer. It’s also a deeply personal question for the people we love. Will they ever change? And, if we’re honest, it’s a question that deeply haunts us personally. Can we change? “Of course,” we initially think, but so many of us live under the mindset “of course not.” Can we change or are we just who we are?
Well, there’s good news. The New Testament says, in the words of Paul, that we can not only change but we can be transformed because, “having believed, you were marked in him [Christ] with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory” (Eph. 1:13-14).
Let’s take some time over the next month to discover what it means to live considering this inheritance … the first fruits of the Spirit.
